Reminiscent of those good ol' Saturday mornings! While not neccesarily taking place in the "morning" nor exactly "cartoony", you'll get to check out many of the festival's best music videos using animation, puppetry and mixed media.

A little monster wonders if his well-meaning mother is hiding an unusual secret. Music by Grammy-winning Danny Weinkauf; video created by 16-year-old Madison Durand.

Lee Barber "Modern Life" Directed by Lee Barber
‘Modern Life’ was created using a series of charcoal drawings that were photographed and assembled using old-school stop-motion techniques. Inspiration for the project originated from a couple of specific encounters. On a visit to the Museum of the Moving Image (NYC), I became fascinated by an interactive exhibit that allowed the viewer to choose different musical excerpts to accompany the same movie clip. The contrasting emotional effect invoked by each option was a revelation. Soon after, I discovered the animated films of William Kentridge and began to experiment with the interaction of songs and “drawings that move”.

She & Him "Doug" Directed by WATTS
A lonesome Christmas tree is the last one left on the lot...when suddenly a pair of hands grab him. Savior! Except it’s just the garbage man and the tree finds himself at the dump, next in line for the wood chipper. Refusing to go down without a fight, the tree literally springs to life and narrowly escapes being turned into mulch. He scurries out of the dump and into a vast, unknown world in search of one thing... a family of his own.

"Lovers Meet" Directed by Brian Matthew Beebe
“Lovers Meet” was created by FITYMI, a small student animation studio at the Carnegie Mellon University Entertainment Technology Center. The production is a blended live-action/animated short musical film inspired by the work of the artist Leonid Afremov. The animation art style resembles impressionist art and the story narrative is music-driven. The music itself is a combination of original character themes that were designed and synced with the characters' actions and emotional changes in the film. The actors are students from Carnegie Mellon's School of Drama and the entire film was shot in an art gallery.

Porter Robison & Madeon "Shelter" Directed by Toshifumi Akai

Shelter tells the story of Rin, a 17-year-old girl who lives her life inside of a futuristic simulation completely by herself in infinite, beautiful loneliness. Each day, Rin awakens in virtual reality and uses a tablet which controls the simulation to create a new, different, beautiful world for herself. Until one day, everything changes, and Rin comes to learn the true origins behind her life inside a simulation.
The story was written by Porter Robinson.

Christopher Jowaisas "Boomerang" Directed by Steven Vander Meer

I animated Boomerang by drawing each individual frame on a 3 X 5 inch index card, all by hand, no computer animation. There are a total of 3820 index cards; it's like a long flip book. All of the imagery and ideas were inspired by listening to the song and thinking about life, the universe and everything. The Absynth Quintet (now the Absynth Quartet) kindly allowed me to use their song Boomerang to make this movie.

David Messier "Franklin's Key" Directed by Caitlin Cadieux and Christina Moliterno
"In 'Franklin's Key' everything is speaking -- not just the vocals. The saw, the bari sax, the percussion ... it's all 'talking.' I'm a cartoon junkie, from Merry Melodies to Chuck Jones to Loren Bouchard. When I close my eyes and listen to this track, I'm suddenly in a haunted house circa 1940 -- the shutters cracking in the wind, the creaks of wooden floorboards -- and when I pinch my eyes even tighter, I see cartoon skeletons playing percussion on rib bones, creepy cats with hollow eyes, and creatures of the night holding seance dance parties that make me want to join the fun and turn that party out. Caitlin and Christina made these visions a cartoon reality." -- David Messier From the Director: "My collaborator Christina Moliterno and I both vibed with the song right away, and we both were instantly reminded of the Disney classic Silly Symphonies, particularly Skeleton Dance, which we were really inspired by. Franklin's Key brought to mind wild times, freaky midnight parties, and the paranoia of hearing things going bump in the night while you're lying awake. We loved exploring this creepy, mysterious world, and trying to figure out who exactly Franklin is and what the deal is with his key! Those questions may not be totally answered, but we hope it's an interesting ride nonetheless." - Caitlin Cadieux
